As part of the Hampshire Music workshops, this morning’s assembly was filled with the sound of buzzing, whirring and musical notes as two teachers from Hampshire Music Service entertained, amused and informed children across the school with their musical talents!
Using real instruments (as well as hosepipes and funnels) the staff played a whole host of different tunes. Learning about woodwind and brass instruments, pupils learnt their names and also how they worked too. This included how to change the pitch on the instruments, from low notes of the French horn to higher pitches on the flute!
Famous tunes being played included Jurassic Park, Beauty and the Beast and Pink Panther, showing off exactly what these amazing instruments could do!

This evening, children could take part in an amazing Easter Craft event. Children could make Easter cards, flowers, cakes, draw pictures and even design feather creatures!
“My favourite was designing an egg – it looked sparkly” (By Blake R Yr3)
“I really liked putting glitter on my hands!” (Karen H Yr6)
“I loved having a feather fight” (Chaya A Yr5)
Halfway through, the children all ate pizza, hot dogs and drinks. This was one of the best parts of the evening! The hall was a bit messy – just like the home of Stig of the Dump! Thank you to all of the parents who helped at the event too, it was a great success.
“We liked making the eggs covered in little feathers because they looked like fluffy monsters” (Alex B Kraken).

As part of the school’s ongoing celebration of the diversity here at Holbrook (including our recently awarded IQM inclusion mark) the school devoted an entire day to Rainbow Inclusion Day. Staff and children dressed up for the event in rainbow colours, sporting all kinds of weird and wacky outfits, while a great cake sale was held at breaktime with some of the most intricately decorated and wonderfully coloured cakes you could imagine!
Fully fuelled with delicious cake, a special assembly was then held for the entire school, where we were also joined by the Makaton signing choir from Osborne Special School in Winchester. Their school students can be seen performing here, with Mr Moloney and Mrs Sivier accompanying them!
Children at Holbrook then performed their own songs, using Makaton signing along with the lyrics…

Last week saw parents and carers from across the school visit us for an Open Maths Morning, joining their children in lessons and learning a little bit about what Maths lessons are like here at Holbrook.
First, parents were offered an opportunity to see some of the methods taught to pupils at the school, before joining their children in lessons and working alongside them through the morning. Children were delighted to be sharing their methods and learning with their friends and family, with several parents jointly teaching the children alongside the staff, while others learnt a new trick or two with their calculations!
