Year 3 Spring Term Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,

After a packed last couple of weeks at school, I hope that you all had a restful and happy Christmas and that your children are looking forward to being back in school and starting the new term with enthusiasm.

The children in Early Years and Key Stage 1 performed fantastically in their nativity show at the end of last term, they all joined together to make a great end to our Autumn term. There was plenty of talent to be seen at the first “Holbrook’s Got Talent Show” too and those who performed did so with enthusiasm. Well done to all of those who took part, you impressed everyone watching.

There is plenty of other talent on show around the school as well; the Year 2 NASA space buggies in the library and the Year 6 clay faces art gallery demonstrate the wide range of talents which your children impress us with on a day to day basis.

This term, we look forward to welcoming another Olympic athlete to inspire the children and some cross School activities with our Federated school, Bedenham. Look out for more details in your child’s Year group blog.

Happy New Year to you!

After a very busy Autumn term, we hope you have had a lovely break and are ready for the new year! We would like to start by saying how pleased we are with the children’s progress. From September to now, we have seen a huge difference in the children’s work ethic and independence. We are excited to begin the new term and below are some of things your child can look forward to.

Geography – Volcanoes and Earthquakes

During this topic, we will be exploring the structure of the Earth and how Volcanoes and Earthquakes occur. We will focus on learning the technical vocabulary for these natural phenomenon’s and understand why and how they function. We will also be using atlases to find some of Earth’s volcanoes and major Earthquake sites and present our findings within a non-chronological report.

Science – Plants

During the Spring term, our Science lessons will be about Plants. We will be observing and describing how seeds and bulbs grow into mature plants. We will also be discovering how plants need water, lights and a suitable temperature to grow and stay healthy. Through practical investigations, the children will be able to describe and explain the importance of these aspects.

PE – Hockey and Gymnastics

During our PE sessions the children will be taking part in hockey and continuing with gymnastics. In gymnastics, the children will be practicing using their core strength to create routines that include balance and shape. They will have to practice using the transformer Colla to create a performance that they will share with their peers. We will also be learning the skills for Hockey, particularly focusing on how to pass accurately and how to defend against the attacking team. Please note that jogging bottoms and jumpers are recommended as these sessions will take place outside.

DT – Levers and linkages

DT this term will be focused on learning about levers and linkages and how they are used in our daily lives. We will investigate and analyse a range of existing products that will help shape our own designs. By the end of the unit, your child will be able to explain how mechanical systems have been used in their product and will be able to select and use a wide range of tools and equipment needed.
